Key observations on the reuse of regenerated reverse osmosis membranes in the chemical and mining industry:

• In the chemical industry, a comparative study of the behaviour of regenerated membranes versus new membranes is being carried out. In the 6 months they have been operating, similar flow rates are produced, at similar pressures and with similar water quality. Both types of membranes require identical cleaning and maintenance processes.
• In a mining industry installation with more than 1,500 membranes, a test is being carried out with one stage of a rack (one of seven). In the short term, the performance of the regenerated membranes is positive and the permeated water reaches the values required by the process.

Ignacio Sanguino, Technician at the Cogeneration and Services Plants of SAICA (Burgo de Ebro) presented the case study during the Conference on Circular Management of Membranes for Water Treatment, held on 18 June 2025 within the framework of the OSMO4LIVES project (LEQUIA, Universitat de Girona).

Key observations on the reuse of regenerated reverse osmosis membranes in the paper industry:

• The process values observed at start-up were similar to those committed by Ecomemb.
• The water treatment process continues to be reliable, guaranteeing over time the conditions required by the user, in a continuous 24h / 7 days a week operation.
• With the configuration we offer, the quantity and quality required by the process is shaped, producing more water with less energy than using new membranes, while meeting the quality requirements of the process.

Regeneration of your own reverse osmosis membranes for reuse. The golf course at La Pineda de Vila-Seca in Tarragona (Infinitum Resort) is one of the pioneers in Spain in regenerating its own membranes for reuse in wastewater regeneration for turf irrigation. This golf course started in 2021 with validation tests under research projects led by Dr. Raquel García Pacheco during her phase as a researcher in the LEQUIA group at UdG, today CEO of Ecomemb.

Tomás Agulló Rodenas, Golf course superintendent at INFINITUM, shares his experience on the regeneration of his own reverse osmosis membranes for reuse, at the round table held on 18 June 2025 as part of the Conference on Circular Management of Membranes for Water Treatment within the framework of the OSMO4LIVES project (LEQUIA, Universitat de Girona).

Key messages from Tomás Agulló Rodenas on the reuse success story:

• Infinitum has been collaborating with Ecomemb for more than two years to regenerate its own membranes and reuse them in the same process.

• Many of their membranes have an initial lifespan of 14 years.

• The implementation of their own regenerated membranes has not resulted in any operational change compared to replacing with new membranes: “They work as always, as before implementing regenerated membranes, with the same pressures, same flow rates, same cleanings and same issues”.

Regenerated Reverse Osmosis Membranes. ECOMEMB joins forces with the public company Ens d’Abastament d’Aigua Ter-Llobregat (ATL) to promote sustainable models for the use and management of reverse osmosis membranes.

The public company Abastecimiento de Agua Ter Llobregat (ATL), dedicated to the purification and distribution of drinking water in bulk to more than 5.5 million inhabitants in Barcelona and 10 other districts of the metropolitan area, is committed to the comprehensive sustainability of the reverse osmosis process, which includes efficient management of membranes at the end of their useful life for their particular process.

ATL supported the regenerated reverse osmosis membrane initiative from the outset through a collaboration agreement with the LEQUIA group at UdG. Since 2019, they have donated membranes to ongoing research projects in order to apply and validate regeneration protocols and subsequently validate the behaviour of regenerated membranes in industrial processes requiring high pressure.

Now that the alternative is already on the market, a strategic alliance has been established with Ecomemb to identify membranes suitable for regeneration and reuse in osmosis processes, thus minimising the disposal of membranes to landfill.

Likewise, Fernando Valero Cervera, Head of R&D&I and Process Control at ATL, during his participation in the round table at the Circular Management of Membranes for Water Treatment Conference held on 18 June 2025, within the framework of the OSMO4LIVES project (LEQUIA, Universitat de Girona), expressed his views on regenerated reverse osmosis membranes as a sustainable and circular commitment.

Key messages from Fernando Valero in his intervention:

• ATL has more than 25,000 reverse osmosis membranes installed in Catalonia between the IDAM del Prat and IDAM la Tordera and plans to increase its desalination capacity in the coming years.

• They have been collaborating with Ecomemb and the Universitat de Girona to extend the useful life of their membranes for several years.

• The fact that more efficient membranes can be obtained from manufacturers and that membranes can be regenerated and reused, in the same processes or in other industrial processes, is a major step forward.

Telwesa is a pioneer company in the reuse of regenerated membranes for landfill leachate treatment. The company began its operations when Ecomemb was still a research project, over seven years ago.

• The company conducted an internal validation through two years of operation, observing that there is no difference in quality or performance compared to other membranes.
• Since then, they have extended the use of regenerated reverse osmosis membranes for leachate treatment operated by Telwesa and have begun their installation for water reuse applications in other industries.
• All partner companies that test regenerated membranes repeat their use because clients verify that they obtain the same water quality at significantly lower costs compared to using new membranes.

Partial membrane replacement at ETAP del ATABAL desalination plant. Nicolás Urgoiti Moinot, Head of Drinking Water Treatment at EMASA, presents a case study on the partial replacement of membranes in one of the membrane racks at the ETAP del ATABAL (Málaga) desalination plant.

This desalination facility has been a pioneer on numerous occasions since beginning operations in 2005, being one of the world’s largest brackish water desalination plants of its time with energy recovery from brine.

Key Messages from Nicolás’s Presentation:

• Reuse of 78 regenerated reverse osmosis membranes supplied by Ecomemb and installed in the second stage of one of their membrane racks: 2 membranes out of 7 (29%), positioned in the first and second positions of each membrane element.

• No need to remove all membranes for the replacement procedure.

• Pressure reduction of at least 1 bar to produce the same water quality, resulting in energy cost savings of at least €4,800 over the 221-day trial period.

• Water quality remained within the operational limits established by the user.

Ecomemb’s NEOTEC circular economy project funded by CDTI kicks off. Last December we received with great joy the final resolution of the NEOTEC 2025 Program from CDTI Innovación (project SNEO-20251171). Now it is a reality and the project has begun to take its first steps.

This call allows us to grow and incorporate talent to develop, over the next two years, internal projects focused on the circular economy. Our main objective is to develop innovative solutions within the framework of reverse osmosis membrane regeneration that will allow us to expand our commercial activity and improve the company’s production processes in terms of sustainability.

One of the main global concerns focuses on achieving a shift from “linear” economic models, based on produce-consume-discard, to a circular economy, a new production and consumption paradigm that aims to optimize resources and minimize generated waste. A technology-based company (TBC) is a company whose activity focuses on the exploitation of products or services that require the use of technologies or knowledge developed from research activity. TBCs base their business strategy or activity on the intensive mastery of scientific and technical knowledge.

The most relevant aspect in the proposals supported under this line is the business strategy based on technology development (technology must be the competitive differentiation factor of the company), based on the creation of their own R&D&I lines.

The Government of Catalonia has recognized the talent and innovation of researchers and CERCA centers with the presentation of the 2024 National Research Awards, as announced last Friday, March 21st, by the Minister of Research and Universities, Núria Montserrat.

These awards seek to recognize research excellence in Catalonia across 7 categories, including the National Innovation Award for the Creation of a Science-Based Company, granted to Ecomemb. This award aims to stimulate the creation of science-based companies, acknowledge the importance of and promote the transfer of research results to society, as well as highlight the increase in socioeconomic potential and social welfare through the formation of companies born from research.

Ecomemb Wins 2024 National Innovation Award

The award recognizes the capacity of the Universitat de Girona (UdG) and ICRA the ability to transfer research in innovative solutions for water management and the circular economy to the market through its support for the creation of ECOMEMB. Ecomemb’s membrane regeneration processes are based on technology developed by the UdG’s LEQUIA research group in collaboration with ICRA through various R&D&I projects, which enabled the technology to be patented with the support of the Valorization and Transfer Unit of the Research and Technology Transfer Office (OITT) of both institutions.

It is estimated that more than 1.5 million of these membranes are discarded worldwide each year (equivalent to 25,500 tons of plastic annually), even though around 70% could be refurbished to extend their lifespan. Ecomemb was created to minimize this problem.

Founded in December 2022, Ecomemb S.L. is the first European company specializing in the regeneration of reverse osmosis membranes for reuse in the same processes for which they were designed.

Ecomemb’s technology allows it to regenerate these membranes while minimizing the resources required and maximizing process efficiency. Regenerated membranes have up to 270 times less CO2-e emissions compared to producing a new membrane and consuming fossil resources for its production. Thus, Ecomemb works to positively impact the environmental sustainability and circular economy of industrial water treatment.

The use of Ecomemb® membranes allows:

• Save up to 60% on membrane replacement costs.
• Use less energy in filtration while maintaining the same water quality standards.
• Extending the membrane’s lifespan (in most cases, the second life is equal to the first)
• Avoid the emission of 95 kg of CO2e into the atmosphere and the generation of 15 kg of plastic waste for each regenerated membrane.
